In this guide, we will provide an overview of each role on our concrete crew, helping you understand where you might fit in and what to expect.
1. FOREMAN
Role:
- Keeping everything organized
- Making final decisions on-site
- Focusing on high production while ensuring safety
- Maintaining crew morale
- Acting as the “coach” of the crew
2. Curb Machine Operator
Role:
- Be focused, precision-driven
- Steady predictable, consistent, and persistent
- Evaluate the concrete mix
- Operate and maintain concrete curb machine
Responsibilities
- Operates, maintains, and cleans Curb Machine
- Communicates the status of the concrete mixture with the Foreman
- Performs manual labor when not curbing

Success Criteria:
- Morning Arrival:
- The curb machine is prepared for operation.
- During Production:
- The crew is informed about the concrete mixture status.
- Concrete curbs are straight and need minimal finishing.
- Effective manual labor is carried out when not curbing.
- End of the Day:
- The curb machine is maintained and cleaned.
- Jobsite housekeeping is completed.
3. Surveyor
Role:
- Support foreman in all technical
- Be ready, accurate, and prepared
- Be a leader, help the Foreman execute the plan
- Be a versatile concrete labor
- Survey layout
Responsibilities
- Layout in front of operations
- Survey Responsibilities
- Install grade stakes
- Verify accuracy
- Physical Labor
- Various activities
- Install/remove string lines and pins
- Install and remove sidewalk forms
- Sawcuts
- Foreman support
Success Criteria:
- Has a plan for the day, and can help direct others.
- The crew has survey layouts ahead
- No rework due to the bad layout.
- Physical labor performed is value-adding and timely.
4. Lead Hand
Role:
- Set the pace
- Be a leader, train others
- Have a production mindset
- Support the Foreman
- Finish Concrete
Responsibilities:
- The first person to touch the concrete out of the curb machine: sets the pace
- Supports the foreman, leads a couple of crew members: installs forms
- Finishes concrete sidewalks
Success Criteria:
- When you arrive in the morning:
- Knows the plan, helping others to get set up
- During production
- Setting the pace
- Crew members are productive
- Before you close the day
- A game plan is set for tomorrow
5. Last Man Behind Finisher
Role:
- The last finisher behind the operation
- Doing right, nobody behind him
- Keep up with the concrete production train
- Finish concrete
Responsibilities
- Finishes concrete curb and sidewalk
- Quality of the finished product
- Installs forms lead workers
- Notices and acts if something needs attention
Success Criteria:
- The final product is worthy to be accepted by the project owner
- The production train can keep moving forward: he is fast
- No rework.
- Forming operation is effective
6. Concrete Labor
Role:
- Produce at the set pace
- Versatile concrete labor
- Finish concrete
- Sawcut and rake
Responsibilities:
- Finishes concrete curbs and sidewalks
- Installs forms, manual labor, diverse tasks
- Raker during sidewalk installationSawcuter
Success Criteria:
- The production train moves forward, fast
- Prep work and saw cuts are performed effectively
- The site is housekept to standard every day.
7. Chute Labor
Role:
- Help the concrete curb operator
- Labor support
- Assist in dumping concrete trucks
Responsibilities:
- Install and remove string lines, pins
- Install and remove sidewalk forms
- Assist concrete mixer trucks in unloading in the curbing machine
- Helps Curb Operator clean and maintain equipment
- Fill the labor gaps
Success Criteria:
- In the morning, knows what’s next according to the Curb Machine Operator’s expectation.
- Smooth unloading of concrete mixer truckers
