At LCL Excavation in New Brunswick, our construction workers enjoy a 4-Day work week. This post explains the origins, how it works and the results
Origins:
In 2018, LCL Excavation began exploring the idea of a 4-day work week. As we expanded our Municipal Infrastructure projects across New Brunswick, company leaders reflected on their past experiences of working on the road. They remembered arriving home late every Friday night and the fatigue they felt on Friday mornings. The common sentiment was, "When will this day end? I just want to go home." Fridays were often unproductive and prone to safety incidents. Additionally, we noticed a shift in values: employees increasingly prioritized work-life balance. People today seek to do more with their personal lives and spend less time solely focused on work.
How It Works:
At LCL Excavation, we work four days a week. If the weather cooperates and no major time delays occur, crews work from Monday to Thursday. If, for example, it rains heavily one day and work is halted, the crew will work on Friday, still maintaining a 4-day work week. For those working on the road, the typical schedule involves leaving early Monday morning to drive to the project location. If everything goes smoothly, they drive back home on Thursday evening, staying in hotels for three nights a week (assuming no rain delays).
Results:
Since implementing the 4-day work week, we've observed increased productivity from our teams. Employees are generally happier and more rested. Those unproductive 5 day work weeks are a thing of the past. The improved work-life balance has made our teams more efficient and has fostered a more positive work environment.
The 4-Day Work Week for Construction Workers in New Brunswick at LCL Excavation demonstrates our commitment to innovation and employee well-being, ensuring we continue to build great teams while delivering exceptional results.
